Innovation in technical ceramics

PM DIN 5001

At the beginning of August 2012, North Bavarian-based Sembach GmbH & Co. KG will be one of the first manufacturers of technical ceramics to be certified in accordance with the new ISO 50001 standards for Energy management systems.

ISO 50001 was introduced in June 2011 with the object of enabling organizations to optimize their energy management systems and reduce energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental effects. Sembach Management Representative Thomas Wehmer states: “The company has defined its actual energy consumption and is currently identifying potential savings. We see great potential with respect to our corporate building, the move to the new energy-efficient building in the industrial park in Lauf an der Pegnitz which will shortly take place will result in significant energy savings. We are also taking concrete measures to align production and administration processes according to the requirements and specifications of ISO standards.”

Investing in energy-saving kilns today allows for sintering processes that require less energy than in the past, Wehmer continues. Moreover, in future we plan to use waste heat from production processes as an energy source. „ISO 50001 is a great opportunity for Sembach to continually improve our contribution to environmental protection”, says Thomas Wehmer.

DIN EN ISO 50001 is the first international standard for Energy management systems which was introduced on 24th April 2012 to replace DIN EN 16004. A new aspect of ISO 50001 is that it specifies the overall energy consumption not only within the company but also the entire life cycle of a product. The standard applies to both large companies with an extensive energy consumption and small and medium-sized companies allowing them to adopt a more systematic approach to energy consumption and optimization. ISO 50001 was worked out by the American-Brazilian international project committee ISO/TC 242 “Project committee: Energy management”.
