Breviary Technical Ceramics

This guide is intended as a companion for the practical engineer, regardless of whether he or she is a user or manufacturer of ceramics. It has been designed as a practical aid for everyday use.

It provides an overview of ceramic materials, their properties, manufacturing and machining methods, and describes the basic rules for construction using ceramics as well as bonding and joining techniques. However it does not replace specific manufacturers’ data. We also refer the reader to the large quantity of specialist literature that is available for people with a scientific background.

With regard to the field of applications of Technical Ceramics, the guide has a table that provides brief information about applications of Technical Ceramics and the typical components used. More detailed information concerning such applications can be found in other literature that can be obtained free of charge from the Informationszentrum Technische Keramik (Information center Technical Ceramics).

This guide was put together after suggestions in cooperation with the Technical Commission of the Technical Ceramics Section of the Association of Ceramics Industries (VKI Verband der keramischen Industrie e. V.).
